So I mentioned last time I was up that I was looking at a job in a museum? Well I got it, and hoo boy, it’s a doozy. It’s only part time, but that’s what I need to get my foot back in the door and not drive myself into the nuthatch. My boss is the curator, and there is a grad student historian, and the director. And there are drama llamas. Everywhere.
So first off, I don’t believe in an interventionist God, but I literally shmoozed my way into a job in my degree field, which was wholly unexpected. So Mum is totally convinced it’s from heaven, I’m a bit more skeptical. Like the Jew mafia came through for me. (director, curator and myself are all Jewish in a podunk town in Louisiana) Now it barely pays, and it’s low hours, but it’s a couple hundred a month I didn’t have before and that will make a difference. And it got Mum off my ass, because job. I will have to take my lunch though, as I am spending too much doordashing with A. the curator.
My first day was just sitting around shooting the shit. My second day was shredding old books that were not savable. We don’t have a quality HVAC system to maintain the museum or the archives, which are tucked into outbuildings that used to be cheap 70s apartments. What that means is things are deteriorating under our care, so we are trying to get a new system in, as well as trade stuff with other museums that can use what we don’t want. There is a whole museum underground where clippings and photos and more are traded across the country and around the world at any given time.
My third day was today, and I scanned old photos all day. Someone connected to the museum collected Alice in Wonderland crap and we have a collection of creepy ass Alice dolls of all sizes and poses we are trying to dump on someone else. So I scanned all those and brought up the idea that we need a master spreadsheet with every item inventoried and located. After A stopped laughing she said it was a good idea. Then we went upstairs to the main archive and the sad window unit AC which is our whole “climate control system” and I realized I can work here as long as I want, because there will never be an end to shit that needs to be done in this place.
SO yeah, part of my paycheck is going to antihistamines.
How’s your week been?
