"Donald Trump takes to Truth Social and graciously responds to his tax returns being publicly released'

This week in Trump featured the usual noise: you shouldn’t pay attention to the news about Trump’s tax returns.

It’s all another grift based on the usual nonsense and more doom scrolling by obliquely ignoring the failure of third parties because that’s his jam.

The consequence of his revenge on the GOP will be an increase in right-wing domestic terrorism.

He then warned that if tax cuts passed during his time in office were not extended "OUR ECONOMY WILL COME CRASHING DOWN—THE BIG ONE!!!" He appears to have been referring to a potential recession.

In a statement issued to Newsweek on Friday, Trump warned that House Democrats "should have never" publicized his tax records and the Supreme Court should not have approved granting Democrats the documents.

"It's going to lead to horrible things for so many people," Trump said. "The great USA divide will now grow far worse. The radical, left Democrats have weaponized everything, but remember, that is a dangerous two-way street!"

Former President Donald Trump has appeared to float the idea of running a third-party campaign if increasingly disgruntled Republican leaders don’t get behind his 2024 run for the presidency.

Trump signaled the possibility by posting an article on Truth Social Wednesday ―“The Coming Split,” by Dan Gelernter, in the right-wing journal American Greatness ― promoting just such an option.

Gelernter believes such a move would torpedo Trump’s chances of winning the White House. But it would also wipe out Republican hopes, which Gelernter argued would be a deserving punishment for rejecting the popular former president.

“Do I think Trump can win as a third-party candidate? No,” he wrote. “Would I vote for him as a third-party candidate? Yes. Because I’m not interested in propping up this corrupt [GOP] gravy-train any longer.”

Gelernter claimed that the “Republican machine has no intention of letting us choose Trump again: He is not a uniparty team player. They’d rather lose an election to the Democrats, their brothers in crime, than win with Trump.”

He asked: “What should we do when a majority of Republicans want Trump, but the Republican Party says we can’t have him? Do we knuckle under and vote for Ron DeSantis because he would be vastly better than any Democrat? I say no, we don’t knuckle under.”

"Trump has maintained the third-party threat for years to intimidate Republicans, but getting on the ballot is a lot of work, requiring a lot of money and organization, with no prospect for success and high odds of humiliating defeat and failure."

Truth Social, the app launched by Donald Trump as a free speech platform for conservatives, is facing serious financial and legal stress as it tries to survive.

Why it matters: The app is the former president's biggest business venture since leaving office — and his best effort to create an alternative populist megaphone to amplify his political brand after being banned from Twitter.

Driving the news: Truth Social owes one of its vendors, an internet infrastructure company for conservatives called RightForge, around $1.6 million in backdated payments, sources familiar with the disagreement told Axios.

  • The situation, first reported by Fox Business, puts Truth Social at risk of losing the cloud hosting support that it needs to operate.
  • Truth Social soft launched in February and rolled out widely to all U.S. iOS users in May. Cloud support, sources told Axios, may have contributed to Truth Social's full rollout delay.
