Time flies — this year is going so fast already. And as such, and living in Louisiana, it’s Mardi Gras season. For the most part as a non-Catholic this means very little to me — you see more beads thrown in trees and bushes, and king cakes are on sale at every grocery outlet. And you see a lot more purple, green and gold.
A king cake is a glorified cinnamon cake, with layers of pastry and cinnamon in a ring shape, covered in gold, green and purple icing and a baby Jebus to hide in the cake. As far as I know, no one actually hides the baby, they just eat the cake.
I’ve had 2 king cakes this year, one from Walmart and one from a local chain called Rouses. They were about the same size, cost and were the store brand. Rouses is clearly superior. Between the better quality icing and higher, lighter cake, the Rouses cake has cream cheese filling injected from the bottom into the quarters of the cake. Such a tasty surprise!
This coming week is our actual vacation — we have Mon — Wed off. Now I have a midterm this weekend for linguistics, and I have a draft of my paper due next Friday, but I have a couple uninterrupted days to work on it.
Digi has recovered from his germ, and he and Nuggie are back to wrestling all over the house and running laps.
In other news, I am watching my Mum blossom and shine from the first healthy adult relationship she’s ever had in her whole life and it’s fantastic. (except for the covid part) Her boyfriend is 84, a devout Catholic and as Cajun as the come. He’s also open, curious, supportive, funny, emotionally available — all things my dad decidedly was not. They are having a lot of fun learning about each other and how to navigate the 21st century, and it’s a blast to hear about. Now, he just needs a gay/bi grandson with a truck and a belly for me (who will convert) and it’s golden. LOL
So how is your week going?
